Tutor Onboarding Guide
Welcome to the Bilingual Homework Hotline
Welcome to the Bilingual Homework Hotline (BHH), a collaborative project between Denton ISD, the University of North Texas (UNT), and Texas Woman's University (TWU).
As a university tutor, you are joining a powerful initiative that connects college students with K-12 learners who need academic support. Many of these students are emergent bilingual learners, who are students developing proficiency in English while maintaining and valuing their home language. Your role goes beyond helping with homework; you are fostering confidence, cultural connection, and academic growth.
Your Role as a Tutor
As a BHH tutor, you will:
- Meet with students virtually through Zoom in one-on-one or small-group sessions.
- Help with assignments in subjects like math, science, reading, and writing, while supporting language development.
- Communicate with patience, empathy, and clarity, recognizing that many students are learning English as a second or additional language.
- Apply what you've learned in your university coursework about bilingual education, ESL instruction, and culturally responsive teaching.
- Use digital tools and resources (including the Homework Helper chatbot) to clarify content, model academic language, and explain complex ideas in accessible ways.
Understanding the Students You'll Serve
You will work with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, primarily in elementary through high school.
Many students are fluent in languages such as Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, or Vietnamese, and are at different stages of English language development.
Remember:
- Some may understand English well but struggle with reading or writing it.
- Others may be recent arrivals to the U.S. and need additional support in understanding school expectations and academic vocabulary.
- Your bilingual abilities, or your willingness to use translation tools and visual supports, can make a tremendous difference in creating understanding and trust.
Your mission is not just to help students finish their homework but to help them learn how to learn — to build strategies, curiosity, and confidence that extend beyond one assignment.
Using Zoom Effectively
You'll be using Zoom as your main instructional space. Here are key expectations:
- Arrive early to your scheduled sessions and check your audio/video setup.
- Use screen sharing to review assignments, explain problems, or show visuals.
- Utilize annotation tools (drawing, typing, highlighting) to make explanations clearer.
- Encourage students to use the chat box or reactions if they're shy about speaking.
- Be aware of wait time — give students space to think before answering.
- Always greet students warmly and close each session by acknowledging their effort ("You worked hard today!").
If you need guidance on how to explain a concept, or if you're unsure how to simplify an explanation, use the Homework Helper chatbot within the tutor portal. It can help you:
- Rephrase academic concepts in student-friendly language.
- Provide step-by-step explanations in English or Spanish.
- Suggest visual or cultural examples to make lessons more relatable.
Teaching with a Bilingual and Culturally Responsive Lens
Your students bring rich linguistic and cultural assets into the learning environment. As a tutor, you are encouraged to:
- View bilingualism as a strength, not a challenge.
- Validate students' home languages by encouraging them to think, write, or explain ideas in both languages when needed.
- Use visuals, gestures, and examples from everyday life to make abstract ideas concrete.
- Model academic language ("Let's say this another way...") rather than simply correcting.
- Be culturally responsive: learn about your students' backgrounds, interests, and experiences to connect learning with their world.
This approach not only supports understanding but also builds the trust and confidence that lead to long-term success.
Working with the Homework Helper Chatbot
The Homework Helper, built on the Veronica AI framework, is your digital teaching partner.
It's trained with best practices in bilingual and ESL pedagogy and is designed to help you teach more effectively — not to replace your role.
You can use it to:
- Generate example explanations or scaffolded responses.
- Get suggestions for culturally relevant ways to present concepts.
- Create quick visuals or images to support comprehension.
- Review strategies for explaining grammar, vocabulary, or math steps.
Think of the chatbot as your AI teaching assistant — a tool that helps you focus on the human part of teaching: listening, motivating, and connecting.
Professional Expectations
- Respect confidentiality: Never record or share student information outside of authorized platforms.
- Communicate professionally: Use clear, encouraging language and positive reinforcement.
- Be dependable: Arrive on time and communicate promptly if you have technical issues.
- Reflect often: After each session, consider what worked, what didn't, and how you might improve.
Remember: every session you lead contributes to your own professional growth as a future educator.
¡Solo es posible juntos!
It is only possible together.
