Everything you need before your first session, in order

About an hour, at your own pace. Nothing to log into. Your progress is saved on this device, so you can stop and come back.

How a session runs, and the rules

The camera rule, what you must never do, what to do if a student is disruptive, recording and the session form, and who to contact. Read this one properly.

Teaching an emergent bilingual student

Where your student is in their English, which scaffold to reach for, and what to do when a session stalls. Skim it now; come back to the part you need mid-session.

Actually try HH once

Open the chatbot and ask it something real before a student is waiting. Try: “How do I explain adding fractions to a 4th grader who is still learning English?” Then ask it to draw something.

Bilingual Homework Hotline — First Session Card

Monday to Thursday, 4:00 to 8:00 PM · (940) 369-0466 · homeworkjuntxs.org/start.html

The three rules: the student's camera stays OFF, unless a parent or guardian is with them and asks that it be on · never share personal contact info or arrange help outside the Hotline · always record, and complete the session form after.

Starting: ask their name and how to say it, chat for a minute (their day, a food, a sport), then “Tell me what this assignment is about.” Say early: “You can use Spanish with me.”

Before you join

  • Laptop or desktop, not a phone
  • Audio tested, your camera ON
  • Zoom recording ready
  • Session Google Form open in a tab
  • HH open in a tab (it is for you, not the student)

After the session

  • Submit the form (one per session, not per student)
  • Upload the recording; if it fails, email the link to rolveraalfaro@dentonisd.org

If it stalls, say one and wait

  • Wait 5 to 10 seconds. Do not fill the silence
  • “Can I give you more information?”
  • “Say it in Spanish, we will find the English”
  • “Show me where it stops making sense”

Ask a person

  • Martha Mendoza · mmendoza2@dentonisd.org
  • Recordings: Rebeca Olvera-Alfaro · rolveraalfaro@dentonisd.org
  • UNT: mariela.nunez-janes@unt.edu
If a student is disruptive, end politely and tell your leader; do not manage it alone.  ·  You are not expected to know everything. Ask for a second Helper any time.  ·  Mid-session doubts: strategies and rules are one click from the Tutor Portal.
